NYON, Switzerland, Oct 10(Reuters) - The United Kingdom and Ireland will host the 2028 European Championship, while Italy and Turkey will stage the 2032 edition of the tournament, UEFA announced on Tuesday. By accepting a joint Italy-Turkey bid for Euro 2032 last week, and with Turkey withdrawing from the race for Euro 2028, the hosts for both tournaments were already all but assured. Turkey's withdrawal from the 2028 race left England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as the sole joint bidders for that tournament. Euro 2028 will be the largest major sporting event the UK and Ireland have jointly staged. Wembley, with a capacity of 90,000, could be expected to host the final and possibly the semi-finals.

In a statement released late on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) urged UEFA to reconsider its decision and urged other countries not to play against Russian teams. UEFA decided after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 that all Russian teams - national or club sides - would be suspended from participation in its competitions. But UEFA said on Tuesday that "children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults", and that Russian U-17 sides would be readmitted to UEFA competitions "in the course of this season". "UAF strongly condemns today's UEFA decision on the return of U-17 teams from the Russian Federation to international competitions," the UAF said, urging UEFA to stick to its blanket ban on Russian teams. England's Football Association reacted to UEFA's decision on Tuesday by saying its youth teams would not play against Russia.

Sept 13 (Reuters) - England manager Gareth Southgate defended Harry Maguire after Scotland fans sarcastically mocked the defender, who scored an own goal in a friendly on Tuesday which England won 3-1 at Hampden Park. The Manchester United defender inadvertently handed Scotland a lifeline by clumsily prodding a low cross into his own net in the 67th minute. "There has been ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly," Southgate said after the match. The 30-year-old Maguire was stripped of the captaincy by his club Manchester United in July and has struggled for first-team football at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, Southgate underlined his importance for England, with the centre back having featured in all of their Euro 2024 qualifying matches.

The depth in England's squad was apparent though as they controlled the contest to give Scotland a reality check. "The first half we didn't really get started and England dominated the ball," Scotland boss Steve Clarke told Channel 4. SELF-DESTRUCTEDScotland self-destructed soon after when they failed to clear their lines and Robertson played the ball straight to Bellingham who rifled a shot past Angus Gunn. Bellingham then rounded off a great display with a slide-rule pass to Kane who finished with his trademark precision.

He says he aims to form a coalition of countries willing to intervene and lead efforts for peace in Ukraine, though in the process is finding himself treading a thin line with the world’s biggest powers. When he launched his political comeback in 2022, Lula told Time magazine that he thought both Russia and Ukraine were responsible for the conflict. Lula condemned Russia’s decision to invade its neighbor, but controversially claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could have done more to avoid the conflict. Lula could not contemplate sending weapons – a step that would go far beyond Brazil’s traditional foreign policy, suggested the analyst. But he couldn’t do nothing, either – after all, Lula had promised to bring Brazil “back” to the world stage.

The second half was a far less entertaining affair, however, as Scotland failed to build on their advantage. But Steve Clarke's substitutions eventually worked as McTominay doubled the lead in the 87th minute. McTominay then scored again in added time when Cyprus failed to clear a cross into the box, with Robertson laying the ball into the path of the midfielder to score. Scotland next play Spain on Tuesday when Cyprus visit Armenia.
GLASGOW, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Celtic beat rivals Rangers 2-1 at Hampden Park on Sunday to lift a 21st Scottish League Cup title, as Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi repeated his heroics from last season's final with a brace. Celtic dominated throughout the contest to claim a third trophy under manager Ange Postecoglou. Furuhashi, who also scored twice in a 2-1 win over Hibernian in last season's final, missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put Celtic ahead in the 42nd minute, sending a header over the bar. Yet he quickly made amends by drifting into the six-yard box and slotting home a Greg Taylor cross two minutes later. Time after time, you're tasked to win at this club," Celtic captain Callum McGregor told the BBC.
A Massachusetts school finally can turn off its lights, which have been on since August 2021 due to a technical glitch. "We are very much aware this is costing taxpayers a significant amount of money," a school official told NBC. Reflex Lighting, the company contracted to fix the lights, arrived at the school this week to reprogram the faulty system and begin turning off the lights, NBC Boston reported. Part of the issue was that ownership of the software company changed several times after the initial installation, according to NBC. "And yes, there will be a remote override switch so this won't happen again," Paul Mustone, president of Reflex Lighting, told NBC.
Brutal cold seizes northeast U.S., shattering record lows

The air temperature at the peak reached minus 47 degrees F (-44 C), with winds gusting near 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour), according to the Mount Washington Observatory. In Providence, Rhode Island, the mercury dropped to minus 9 degrees F (-23 C), well below the previous all-time low of minus 2 degrees F (-19 C), set in 1918. Several cities took emergency measures to aid residents, including opening warming centers and conducting outreach to ensure homeless people were sheltered from the brutal cold. The frigid weather was expected to be short-lived, with temperatures forecast to be significantly higher on Sunday. The high temperature in Boston on Sunday will approach 47 degrees F (8.3 C), the NWS said.
Minnechaug is the only high school in its district and serves 1,200 students from the towns of Wilbraham and Hampden. The original high school building, which dates back to 1959, was replaced with the current 248,000-square foot structure in 2012. One of the cost-saving measures the school board insisted on was a “green lighting system” run on software installed by a company called 5th Light to control the lights in the building. But in August 2021, staffers at the school noticed that the lights were not dimming in the daytime and burning brightly through the night. “The lights that are being referred to are the classroom lights, not the outdoor lights.
"We are very much aware this is costing taxpayers a significant amount of money," a school official told NBC. Approximately 7,000 lights inside Minnechaug Regional High School have remained on since August 24, 2021, when the software operating the lighting system failed, NBC News reported. Part of the issue was that ownership of the software company changed several times after the initial installation, according to NBC. But the new owner, Reflex Lighting, said it couldn't send contractors until the following year due to the pandemic. "And yes, there will be a remote override switch so this won't happen again," Paul Mustone, president of Reflex Lighting, told NBC.
